Do you think it’s a good idea to build a gambling casino near a nuclear power plant?

curiousgeorge asked:

This is a proposal in Limerick, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Residents are concerned of the lax security at the power plant, which was publicized a few weeks ago in Time Magazine. What do you think? What are the pros and cons of building a casino near a power plant?
I should add: The residents are OPPOSED to the casino, but local politicians are pushing it through. They are looking for as many reasons as possible to stop the casino from being built there. Any comments, both for or against, are welcome.

Both casino and power plant have pros and cons, but I honestly cannot see why the existence of one would interfere with costructing the other. Think about it this way, if somehing goes wrong w/ the plant, would it be any better if they had a hostpital, school, offices or housings near it? Are gamblers more worthy than regular ppl?

Probably what you should be seeking is a no building zone around a perimeter. Or better yet, better security altogether.

    Edit to additional comment:
If I were a local resident, I would welcome the casino in this specific case. If there is a nuclear power plant in my area, chances are that real state values are down, making it harder to move to some other place. As a drive to the local economy, the power plant also adds little, since there not labor intensive.

Now, although the construction of a casino has its problems (prostitution, increased violence) it also creates job opportunities (it’s very labor intensive) and will likely drive up real estate values. It will certainly destroy the local comunity (replacing it with another) and the net benefit to the original ppl living there are hard to assess.

In this particular case though, I think it will be highly beneficial (of course, I don’t know your comunity, so I’m just guessing what it’s like). Since it’s near a power plant it is probably in decline, with the wealthier and better educated people leaving it and being replaced by poorer people. Violence is likely to be on the rise an local business to be closing. The casino could offset this decline. It would attract businesses, better educated ppl, increase job opportunities. Even for home owner who do not want to live near that sort of situation, the higher value of their property could enable them to move away to a better place (away from a nuclear power plant).

The same as the pros and cons of building ANYTHING next to a power plant.

Nothing is special about a casino vs. a hotel or a theater. The same considerations apply.
